Incubus have released a re-recorded version of their 2001 album, Morning View. Stream it below.

In a recent interview with Consequence, Incubus vocalist Brandon Boyd spoke about maintaining the “burgeoning legacy” of the original album while revisiting it for Morning View XXIII. “A lot of people love this album the way it is — it’s not like it’s broken,” he said.

However, the band wanted to capture how the songs have “morphed and changed” over the past few decades. “They’ve evolved out into totally different arrangements and then made their way back to the original arrangement  — we’ve been playing them that long at this point,” he explained. “On the re-recording, you can tell it’s the same song, but there are different embellishments.”

Starting in late August, Incubus will perform Morning View in full on a US arena tour with special guest Coheed and Cambria (get tickets here). This past weekend, the group played BeachLife Festival in California. Read our recap of the event.

Weekend WatchAlong: Kuch Naa Kaho is Finally Streaming! I think only FilmiKudhi and I will be super excited about this, but we will be VERY excited! Kuch Naa Kaho is a minor but enjoyable rom-com from the 2000s which has not been available anywhere but einthusan for ages. And now it’s for rent! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay! We can do a WatchAlong!!!

I am available basically any time this weekend except Sunday night. So, Friday evening? Saturday morning? Saturday afternoon? Saturday evening? Sunday morning? Sunday afternoon? What’s good?

And now, let me sell you on this movie! It’s the 2000s! Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy did the music! Abhishek and Aish co-starring before they were dating! Satish Shah is a kick! Lowkey feminist storyline! Everyone is wearing those stupid STUPID bellbottom pants with kick slits that were really in for like 18 months! Come on now, you know you want to watch it!

Scheduling is DIFFICULT! I try not to do it around one person, but FilmiKudhi has been begging for Kuch Naa Kaho foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeveeeeeeeeeer, I can’t do it the one weekend she can’t make it. On the other hand, Crew is releasing this weekend! Will most people be able to watch it in time for a Zoom call? Or should we wait until next week?

Kuch Naa Kaho Next Weekend! I will put up a post closer to the time to help us figure out that schedule.

Crew, Zoom call on Saturday night? Too early? Not everyone will have seen it yet? Sunday afternoon? Next weekend also?

Crew Review (No Spoilers): Fun Frothy and Forgettable! https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/crew-review-no-spoilers-fun-frothy-and-forgettable/ https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/crew-review-no-spoilers-fun-frothy-and-forgettable/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 16:14:50 +0000 https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/crew-review-no-spoilers-fun-frothy-and-forgettable/ [ad_1]

Such a fun movie! I took Friday off this week (not for the movie, for spring cleaning) and I went to a midday show. The perfect spring film to watch on a sunny afternoon.

Can a film be feminist by exclusion? I’m gonna say yes! This film has no violence against women, no women who are defined by their roles as wives/mothers/girlfriends, and no women who are “housewives”. And no one who finds that odd, this is the reality of the world, women work and earn money and have worries beyond partners and children.

On the other hand, there’s no actual “message” in the film. Or a lot of depth or meaning. It’s just fun, just watching these characters live their lives and hit the beats of the narrative. It’s very very pleasant, but I could easily forget it in a week. On the other hand, that means I can also come back to it in a week and watch it and enjoy it all over again, and then forget it again. A gift!

The songs are forgettable, the characters are forgettable, the plot twists are forgettable. I think what I will remember most is just the setting, the reality of the daily lives of these women. Flight Attendant is a glamorous job everywhere, and especially in India. Our heroines are beautiful women with perfect make-up and high heels and short skirts. And then the film gently pushes away that surface and shows the grind of humiliation from the superiors, low pay, corporate uncaring, long hours, and repetitive tasks. Most of all it shows that this job is not done because it is “fun” or “glamorous”, it’s because they need MONEY. And it is one of the few jobs that a woman in India can get and bring money home. Our heroines are the top earners in their household and they go into work every day so they can bring money home, just like anyone else. That’s memorable!

Watch the film for the fun, for the reality of work, for the super charming actors (Shout out to Diljit Dosanjh! Super sexy in this), for a fun girls night out, forget about it, and 3 months later watch it again for a girls night in on Netflix!

Crew Review (SPOILERS): More A Series of Events Than a Plot, But Fun! https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/crew-review-spoilers-more-a-series-of-events-than-a-plot-but-fun/ https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/crew-review-spoilers-more-a-series-of-events-than-a-plot-but-fun/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 15:22:40 +0000 https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/crew-review-spoilers-more-a-series-of-events-than-a-plot-but-fun/ [ad_1]

I don’t want you to spoil yourself on this movie, because there’s a whole lot of twists and things that aren’t in the trailer. But I DO want you to spoil yourself on this movie because there’s some bits where it feels like our heroines are doing the wrong thing, and I want you to know that it’s okay.

Whole plot in one paragraph”

Our 3 heroines are all flight attendants out of necessity to support their families while they wait for their dreams to come true (Tabu to open a restaurant with her husband, Kriti to get a job as a pilot, Kareena to start her own company). Their airline is running out of money and they aren’t getting paid. So they start smuggling gold out of the country and making extra money that way. Someone tips off customs (which ruins Kriti’s romance with customs officer Diljit Dosanjh), they avoid arrest but get fired and are shamed by their coworkers who have been struggling without pay while they’ve been enjoying their illgotten gains. And then they learn that the gold they were smuggling was for the owner of the airline, who was preparing to flee the country and live high off the money he embezzled and snuck out in gold. They are furious and shamed as they realize they were part of this corporate scam. So the three women go to the Middle East and try to steal the gold back. They eventually succeed by hijacking the private plane the company owner is taking to the Cayman Islands, set him up to be arrested by customs, and ride off in the sunset with the gold. Which they then distribute to the ripped off employees.

This movie is about the actresses and the characters. It is delightful to see these 3 strong actresses playing complex women. Tabu hates her job, hates the company, but loves her husband and this is their life. She works for the salary and the savings, he stays home and cooks and delivers food while they dream of someday opening a restaurant. Her backstory is being a spoiled Beauty Queen who married into a “good” family and then they ended up thrown out of the family and scrapping on their own. She isn’t booksmart, she isn’t ambitious, she’s just working because that’s life, you work for money. On the other hand, she loves her husband and vice versa and they have a healthy happy sex life. And they have their dreams that aren’t related to family or kids or anything else. Tabu turns to illegal behavior because she is driven to it, she is at the end of her working career and has been waiting for years for things to get better.

Kriti is tough and smart and the pride of her family. Yes she also has a brother, but her parents see her as the one who will go far. They take out loans for her education, they pin all their hopes on her job. That’s a lot to put on her, and it’s especially hard to put it on a woman because, when she isn’t able to get her dream job as a pilot, the best she can do is flight attendant. She’s not Tabu, who doesn’t even have a degree, she’s impressive and accomplished. But she’s also a woman so she has to be the main wage earner of her family, on the only jobs a woman can get. Kriti turns to illegal behavior because all her smarts and abilities and everything else can get her nothing legally.

And then there’s Kareena, the most interesting and complex of the heroines. Most of her co-workers hate her, most people around her dislike her. She is openly out to make money and get rich. The only person she seems to love is her grandfather who raised her. But on the other hand, she gives almost all her cash to the bathroom attendant as a tip, routinely. And she is the voice encouraging Kriti and Tabu to dream big, to spoil themselves, to see the unfairness of the system. If she truly didn’t care about anyone, why would she be trying to help Kriti and Tabu see things differently? In the end, she is just as disgusted and ashamed and angry about helping the rich stay rich by smuggling gold as the other two. She may say she is all about money, but she isn’t really.

The first third of the movie is watching these three women deal with their daily lives as working women, and that is really interesting. The last third of the movie is watching them understand the systemic injustices and try to take down the man who was stealing their wages and their pensions and destroying lives without caring, and part of that is smuggling gold. If you are hiding money, you are probably stealing money. And if you are smuggling money OUT from India (the movie makes the point many times how odd it is to smuggle gold out), then you are stealing from India.

The middle third is where it’s a little bleh. Partly that is on purpose, the filmmakers make sure we see the contrast of the three of them being happy and laughing while their coworkers are still scrapping by and desperate about money. So we the audience never get to FULLY enjoy their spending sprees. But part of that is not on purpose, the film is just hitting the plot points so it can get to part 3.

Making smuggling “wrong” is a tough sell in Hindi films. It’s been established for years and years as the “not that bad” sort of crime. But this film makes it work! Smuggling is rich people avoiding scrutiny on what they are doing with their money. So take it back a step, why don’t they want people to see what they are doing with their money????? What choices are they making? And what choices are they making FOR OTHERS???

The first third and the last third of this film balance just right. All these employees are hanging on waiting for their paychecks and their pension because they have no other options, it’s too hard to start over with a new job. They are powerless in the hands of their boss who is making selfish choices for himself. And then the women take that power back by stealing back the gold.

Maybe the middle bit is less satisfying because we know it isn’t the women taking their power back? They are still being paid for smuggling, they have just traded one uncaring male boss for another. And they take the money and give it to their families and to corporations instead of building their own powerblock. We have the first bit where we clearly see how the power structure has trapped them, and then we have the middle bit where they have money and they are being STUPID and staying in the same patterns. It has to be like that in order to get to the end where they understand what they were doing was just supporting the same oppressors. But it’s frustrating to watch and I think the filmmakers and actresses got a little bored creating it.

Anyway, watch the movie! Women supporting women, healthy loving equal marriage, complicated motivations and (best of all) an anti-corporations message!

Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me on April Fools Day??? https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/monday-morning-questions-what-do-you-want-to-ask-me-on-april-fools-day/ https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/monday-morning-questions-what-do-you-want-to-ask-me-on-april-fools-day/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 14:37:41 +0000 https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/monday-morning-questions-what-do-you-want-to-ask-me-on-april-fools-day/ [ad_1]

Happy April Fools Day! What a dreadful holiday. I was trying to think of a fun nice prank to put up for this post and everything I thought of just felt MEAN. Is it possible there is no fun nice prank that exists in the world?

Here is where you get to ask me anything you want from “Should I see Crew?” to “why do you hate pranks?” Just keep swinging back to this post all week as you think of new questions!

Now, question for you! Two questions, first very important: Do you do fake Easter Eggs with stuff inside, or real Easter Eggs that are just Eggs?

My family always did Real Easter Eggs, and my nephews are now doing the same. They are fun! You can decorate and dye them yourself, and then you get to play Egg Fight at breakfast (two people hit their eggs together and whichever egg stays uncracked, wins). Plus the celebratory Easter treat of Multi-colored Egg Salad (because the dye always gets onto the white of the egg too).

Second question, if you had to pick, would you rather do an Easter Egg hunt or a Holi game?

Easter Egg hunt for me. Absolutely would prefer a clean quiet solitary activity to a loud messy crowded one.

I Saw the TV Glow’s star-studded soundtrack arrives in full https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/i-saw-the-tv-glows-star-studded-soundtrack-arrives-in-full/ https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/i-saw-the-tv-glows-star-studded-soundtrack-arrives-in-full/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 14:23:04 +0000 https://scoop.ltd/index.php/2024/05/10/i-saw-the-tv-glows-star-studded-soundtrack-arrives-in-full/ [ad_1]

The soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun’s new coming-of-age horror film I Saw the TV Glow has arrived, with songs by Sloppy Jane (featuring Phoebe Bridgers), Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, and more.

First announced in February, the soundtrack and its stacked lineup comes via A24 Music, and is available on a thematically-appropriate pink opaque vinyl. Atmospheric and diverse in style, the songs allude to the film’s emotional depth, and even contribute to the world of its narrative.

In the film, Bridgers and Sloppy Jane’s Haley Dahl appear as themselves, as do Kristina Esfandiari and her band King Woman. Also appearing in the film (albeit, as characters) are Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Conner O’Malley, and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan (who contributed a bonus track to vinyl editions of the soundtrack).

Polachek’s song, “Starburned and Unkissed” dropped earlier this month as the soundtrack’s lead single. Additionally, Alex G composed the score for the film, which will arrive as an album of its own on May 16th.

I Saw the TV Glow is the latest film from Schoenbrum, who directed 2021’s We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. The plot follows two friends’ complicated lives, and their shared fandom of TV show. According to Schoenbrum, it’s “about — at least for me — a queer experience of kind of looking for glimmers of a magic that I thought couldn’t exist in real life in art and in entertainment.”

The film premiered in select cities on May 3rd and will have a wide release on May 17th. Stream the soundtrack below.

3 Important Discussion Questions! Yes, 3 important topics for us all to crowdsource! I have high hopes from you. If nothing else, I hope to get a settled answer on the pronunciation.

Nephew A, who is now 4, has hit a spell of having too many bad thoughts to be able to sleep. Thoughts like Robots and Alligators and Dinosaurs. Scary scary things. And my sister has tried every possible placebo effect comfort thing to get him to just settle and SLEEP, without luck (dreamcatchers, washing the thoughts out of his head, thinking about cars chasing the thoughts out, etc.). As he points out, “that’s just PRETEND”. Versus his worries about Robot Dogs which are, of course, very real.

Any ideas? For those of you who have dealt with the 4 year old bedtime worries, what worked? Personally, when I was 4, I remember just focusing on the blinking fire alarm light over my bed. If I stayed awake and made sure it blinked every minute, everything would be FINE.

Next question! Is it “Sufi-ism” or “Suf-ism”? I’ve always thought of it as “Sufi-ism” and then I just heard someone pronounce it as “Suf-ism” and it made me question EVERYTHING.

And finally, very important in this festive season, which song is better? “My Name is Anthony Gonsalves” or “Rang Barse”???
